Speaker 1:

Hello, I am Lisa Lish and I am a career and leadership development coach, and I'm going to talk to you today about what is a dream job. Is it even a real thing? Sometimes we call a dream job a pitch perfect job. I also like to call it a dream job, but we're gonna talk about what are the elements of a dream job that helps you in your career success. Because what I would love is if you are in that situation where you are just like, oh yeah, I hate this job, I am not motivated, I don't like it, I'm burned out. This is awful. I would really like to see you move into that state of I love my job, I'm really enjoying this, and I've seen that myself and I've seen that happen with my clients, and that's what I'm here to do is to help you make that transition today, to help you make that transformation, because a job is such a big part of your life and you spend a lot of time and energy on your job, and so when it's bad, it's really bad. My goal is for you to have a great career. I love it when my clients are happy with the progress they're making in their careers and where they are right now, and a great career in my mind, is having career success, whatever that means to you, but enjoying that success with joy. And to me, that means that you are not sacrificing your authenticity, you're not sacrificing your happiness, you're not compromising your values, but you are achieving success with joy, all while being yourself. I don't want you to be overstressed. I don't want you to be overwhelmed putting up with toxicity and all of that. So if you stay with me today until the end, I have a freebie for you. It is not a review of the information I'm sharing with you today on this webinar. It is actually additional, and so you get some bonus information if you stay until the end.

Speaker 1:

There are a lot of webinars out there and there are a lot of career coaches. Believe me, I know. So what makes today different and why should you stick around and why should you listen? Well, this is different, and part of the difference is me, because I've looked around and I haven't seen a lot of career coaches that have actually worked inside companies as an employee, working to develop their own careers in that type of culture and that type of environment. But I have.

Speaker 1:

I was in corporate environments for the first 20-odd years of my career before I went out on my own as a consultant to coach others. So I have experienced firsthand a lot of what you're experiencing right now and have grown my career in those situations, and so I have personal experience on doing that and what that feels like and what the challenges are. I have felt very stuck before in my career, stuck in a job that didn't have meaning for me, stuck working in a toxic environment, stuck working for a boss that I just was not aligned with. I've had those challenges and I know what that feels like. I worked for excuse me, I worked for Bear Corporation. I worked for Early Key, I worked for Baker Botts, baker Hughes and a couple of other companies and I have consulted with some of those companies, as well as these others that I've listed here. And I have consulted with some of those companies, as well as these others that I've listed here, and as a consultant I've been able to see the culture and the environment and the processes for a variety of different companies personally as an employee and as a consultant and a career development coach and as a leadership coach. So I've seen these cultures, I've seen how their processes work and I've had in-depth experience, but I've also worked with many individual women, some professional women, and helped them to develop their careers and to make more money and to make the changes the career changes that they. I've worked with women who have been laid off and have been looking for a new job. I have worked with women who got stuck or kind of topped out in careers and helped them through my tested processes and tools. I have helped them to advance in their careers in the ways that they wanted to and find jobs and positions that help grow them, but also without the stress and the toxicity that none of us needs in our lives.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to talk about is a dream job a real thing or is it like a unicorn that just doesn't exist? So, is a dream job real? I'm going to talk about what a dream job is not and what makes a dream job a dream job. What are the specific elements based on research and interviews with thousands of people working in jobs that are not dream jobs and in jobs that are dream jobs, so that we can tell the difference and how to find your dream job and what are some of the initial steps you can take to move towards finding your dream job. And sometimes I talk with clients about, you know, can their current job be more of a dream job? Because we don't necessarily need to throw out the baby with the bathwater, right, we want to. If there are some strong elements of your current role, maybe we just need some tweaking to make it more of a dream job. I'll talk a little bit about, you know, is there some tweaking you can do in the meantime? And then also, if you do need to make a change, what are some initial steps you can take to help get you to move forward towards that change? Okay, number one is a dream job real, and I say yes, absolutely.

Speaker 1:

A dream job is a real thing, and I've seen some of my clients get dream jobs and have, you know, a job that they really like and enjoy for years, years. You know a job that they you wouldn't be able to pull them away from because they're enjoying it, and I've had that experience myself. The biggest part of what makes a dream job a dream job is is this the right job for you right now in your career? Does it meet your goals, meet your values and does it help you to develop to where you're going next? Is it the right job right now to help you grow, make the connections you want to make and to expand your skills so that you're ready for the next step. And that, my friends, is a dream job. And what is a dream job? Not? A dream job is not constant fun, completely stress and problem-free, easy-peasy and a cakewalk, because we want a job that is challenging, it is interesting and has a variety of characteristics in it that helps us to meet a number of criteria. That makes a dream job a dream job. So what makes a dream job a dream job?

Speaker 1:

Number one engaging work. People said that when they find work that is really engaging to them, that is part of having just a great job a dream job. Engaging work is work that helps us to get into a flow state where we just lose track of time. Have you ever done that? Have you been working on a report or working with team members, or maybe analyzing some data, and you looked up and you saw that like hours had passed and you didn't realize so much time had gone by. That's being in a flow state, and sometimes we experience that at work. Sometimes we experience that on something we're working on at home. That is engaging work. That's engaging where it really taps in to skills and interests of ours and we just have that sense of being in the flow and losing track of time. That's one important element of what people report as being part of a dream job.

Speaker 1:

And number two making a difference. We all want to feel like we are part of something bigger than ourselves. We're part of an industry that we care about or we get to work on creating solutions for customers and clients. We want to know that our work makes a difference, that we're making an impact, that we're leaving a legacy. So look for ways that, in your job now or in the future, you can make an impact and make a difference, leave a legacy, and that will help to add that joy to your life.

Speaker 1:

Number three we all want to be growing and learning and developing our skills. If you know where you want to go next in your career and maybe next beyond that, be thinking about what skills you're going to need that you don't have right now and what are some of the ways that, either in your current job or in a future role, you can develop the skills that you need. Can you go to training, can you have a mentor, can you shadow people who are doing what you want to be doing in the future and learn more about what they're doing. What are the opportunities for you to learn and grow and challenge yourself, maybe with new projects or sitting on a new team? Look for those opportunities, because that's one of the aspects that people say really makes a job worthwhile for them. And number four building supportive relationships. You know, the workplace is a great place to meet people maybe who have the same interests and the same mission in life. When you get to meet people and work on something that you both care about a problem solution or creating opportunities for other employees that's an opportunity to engage with people that can make a difference in your career and in your life. Those can be and in your life those can be absolutely great and meaningful friendships. So those are the four key elements that help make a dream job a dream job. There's one more I want to talk about, because these are additive. These are additive elements that can help you think through what your current job or next job could be like, but I want to talk about something that we also want to take away from a job that will help make it a dream job. So think of this as a bonus factor Eliminating major negatives.

Speaker 1:

A major negative in a job might be a really long commute. There was a job I had that where I had a two-hour commute each way for a while and that was a major negative for me. Otherwise the job was pretty good, but that commute just made me hate that job and made it a toxic experience for me. You know, a bad culture, a toxic culture, a boss that doesn't manage well these are some major negatives in a job, and looking for ways to eliminate these major negatives can help bring any job a little closer to being a dream job. So I'd like for you to sit down and think about what would be major negatives for you and, if you're experiencing those now, see if there are ways to get that out of your current job. And, if you're looking for a new job, be aware of what would be a major negative for you and ask some questions around that while interviewing so that you can make sure that you don't get yourself into a situation with some of these major negatives.

Speaker 1:

So first steps you can take. It is so important for us to stay in action in terms of developing our careers, taking some action every week or a couple of times a month is really important to just our own sense of self-esteem and also in getting the result that we want and finding that next great dream job that is purposeful to our career development. So, number one get very clear on what it is that you're looking for. If removing a major negative is important for you, if having skills development is very important for you, get very clear on that. Are you looking for a job where you can meet people and build relationships and develop a camaraderie among co-workers? Get clear. You know. A lot of times I work with clients and they come to me and I understand this completely. They'll say I know I need a change. I feel really stuck but I'm not sure what to change to. And getting that clarity is really part of the process of career development getting very clear on what you want.

Speaker 1:

Next, number two, look at your current role and see if there are any changes that you can make. Can you eliminate some major negatives or can you ask for training or a development opportunity where you can learn new skills or build new relationships? Is there some tweaking that can be done? And third, take small, safe steps to start with. Most of us are not comfortable with major changes. I don't recommend anyone go and quit their job today suddenly. I recommend taking small, safe steps to move forward in our careers and to stay in action, and in my freebie that I'm going to share with you in a minute, I've got some tips for you on how to take some action.

Speaker 1:

So, in summary, a dream job is real. It's the next best job for you in your career development and based on your life right now. It is not easy peasy. It is not a cakewalk. What makes a dream job a dream job, remember, is engaging work, the opportunity to have impact and really make a difference. Skills development opportunities and that may be through mentoring or coaching or taking a training class, but an opportunity to learn new skills and grow as a professional and building supportive relationships, the opportunity to work with people that you have some things in common with and that you can bond with over some shared experiences and some shared goals. That's what makes a dream job a dream job, especially if you can eliminate those major negatives that are just pet peeves for you. And then we also talked about steps you can take to find your dream job, but I'm gonna share even more because congratulations and thank you.
